Disney World with Kids: Tips and Tricks from a Mom of Two

Disney World with Kids – a phrase that conjures up images of wide-eyed wonder, ear-to-ear smiles, and heartwarming family moments.

As a mom who has experienced the pure joy of witnessing my two little ones immersed in Disney magic, I can vouch for the fact that it is a vacation like no other. 

However, before we get lost in the fantasy of the parks, characters, and attractions, let’s address the elephant in the room – the stressful ordeal of planning a Disney World trip. 

If you’ve ever found yourself navigating the neverending list of decisions, then you’re well aware of the challenges that lie ahead.

Traveling to the “Happiest Place on Earth requires you to select the right parks, reserve the best dinking spot, decipher the transportation options, and secure the perfect hotel.  It can be an extremely stressful process.

But don’t worry fellow parents,  I’ve been there, and I’m here to guide you through this adventure.  

My husband and I have taken our kids to Disney World every year since my daughter was 4 months old. 

 I will share my valuable insights on making your Disney World vacation a seamless and unforgettable experience.

How to select the best Disneyworld Park for Your kids:

The 4 parks that makeup Disney World are Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. 

 You want to look at your family and decide what they enjoy the most.  

Are your kids older with an interest in fast rollercoasters and thrill rides?  

Are you going to Disney World with toddlers that would enjoy meeting characters like Mikey Mouse?  How about any science or animal lovers?  

If you are really lucky to have the time and money, I would recommend visiting all four parks. 

Disney World tickets can either be purchased for a single park(meaning you can only visit one park that day) or for park hopping(meaning you can visit multiple parks in 1 day). 

Consider purchasing the park hopper option if you have less than 4 days.  That way you can get the 4-park experience. 

Magic Kingdom

Pros of Magic Kingdom for Families

• Nostalgic Charm: The Magic Kingdom’s classic attractions, like “It’s a small world” and Dumbo the Flying Elephant, bring back memories for us parents and create new ones for our children.
• Character Experiences:  I will never forget the first time my son met Mickey.  The look on his face will be etched into my memories forever.  Magic Kingdom is a great place to meet beloved Disney characters like Mickey, Minnie, Cinderella, and more, creating magical moments that your children will treasure forever.
• Family-Friendly Attractions: Magic Kingdom caters to visitors of all ages, offering a vast array of family-friendly rides and shows suitable for everyone.  This park will have the most rides for young kids and toddlers. 
• Spectacular Nighttime Shows: Don’t miss the fireworks display, “Happily Ever After,” which beautifully lights up the night sky with a heartwarming story.  Watch out for Tinkerbell at the end of the show as she will fly over the crowd. 

Cons to Consider

• Crowds: Magic Kingdom is Disney’s most popular park, which means it can get crowded, especially during peak seasons. Be prepared for long wait times for some attractions.
• Weather: Florida’s weather can be unpredictable, with hot and humid days, so staying hydrated and taking breaks in shaded areas is essential, especially for younger kids.  Afternoon showers are not uncommon, so consider packing a poncho or rain gear as well. 
• Potential Overstimulation: With so much to see and do, younger children might become overwhelmed. Pace your day and consider taking breaks to avoid overstimulation.

Tips for Visiting the Magic Kingdom

• Plan Ahead: Utilize Disney’s Genie+ system to book ride reservations in advance, reducing wait times for popular attractions.  I recommend booking Peter Pans Flight as your first Genie+ selection.
• Arrive Early: Get to the park before the official opening time to enjoy shorter wait times and make the most of your day.
• Use Rider Switch: If you have children of varying ages, Rider Switch allows one adult to wait with the non-riding child while the others enjoy the ride. Then, the waiting adult can ride without waiting in line again.  My husband and I used this all the time.  
• Bring Snacks and Water: Save time and money by packing some snacks and refillable water bottles. Staying hydrated and having a quick bite during waits can be a lifesaver.  
• Take Advantage of Baby Care Centers: Magic Kingdom offers well-equipped, air-conditioned Baby Care Centers with changing tables, nursing rooms, and feeding areas for your convenience.  The baby care center in Magic Kingdom is between Casey’s Corner and Crystal Palace. 

Best Restaurants at the Magic Kingdom

• Be Our Guest: Located in Beast’s Castle, this restaurant offers an enchanting dining experience.  Imagine eating in the famous ballroom from Beauty and the Beast
• Crystal Palace: Enjoy a character dining experience with Winnie the Pooh and friends in this buffet-style restaurant. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Your kids will be star-struck when they meet Tigger, Piglet, and Pooh. 
• Columbia Harbour House: A quick-service restaurant with a variety of options, including seafood, salads, and chicken nuggets. It’s a great choice for a family meal.  Try the lobster roll.  You won’t regret it!
• Aloha Isle: Satisfy your sweet tooth with the famous Dole Whip, a refreshing pineapple soft-serve treat.  It is the perfect treat in the hot Florida sun.

Epcot:

Pros of Epcot for Families

• Cultural Exploration: Epcot’s World Showcase pavillions offer a unique opportunity for children to immerse themselves in diverse cultures from around the globe.
• Educational Experience: The park presents various interactive exhibits and attractions that encourage learning about science, innovation, and international customs.
• Thrilling Rides: Epcot boasts exciting rides such as Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind and Soarin’ Around the World.
• Rides for smaller children:  There are also rides targeted to a younger demographic including Remi’s Ratatouille Adventure and Frozen Ever After. 
• Top Character Experiences: Your children can meet popular Disney characters such as Anna and Elsa from Frozen in the Norway pavilion. 
• Unique Festivals:  Epcot hosts 4 unique festivals a year with special food and entertainment offerings

Cons to Consider

• Limited Small Children Attractions: Epcot might have fewer attractions specifically designed for very young children compared to other Disney parks.
• Large Park Size: Epcot is vast, and navigating between the different sections can be time-consuming, so plan accordingly and wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk!

Tips for Visiting Epcot

• Plan Your Visit: Check the park’s schedule for special events, performances, and character meet-and-greets to maximize your experience.  There is always so much going on depending on what festival Epcot is hosting. 
• Utilize the Genie+ System: Reserve FastPasses for popular attractions like Remi’s Ratatouille Adventure’ and Frozen Ever After to minimize wait times.
• Experience the World Showcase: Take your time to explore each pavilion in the World Showcase, enjoying the cuisine, shows, and cultural demonstrations.  You can get a scavenger hunt of items to look for in each pavilion to keep your little one entertained. These are purchased at Creations Shop, Port or Entry, or World Traveler Shop
• Kidcot Fun Stops: Engage your children with the Kidcot Fun Stops at each pavilion, where they can collect stamps, color, and interact with cultural representatives.
• Luminous: Don’t miss the spectacular nighttime show, Luminous, which features fireworks, lasers, and an inspiring story.

Best Restaurants at Epcot

• Akershus Royal Banquet Hall: Meet Disney princesses while enjoying a delightful Norwegian-inspired breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
• Biergarten Restaurant: This German buffet-style eatery provides a lively atmosphere with traditional Oktoberfest entertainment.
• San Angel Inn Restaurante: Experience authentic Mexican cuisine while enjoying the ambiance of the restaurant overlooking the Gran Fiesta Tour attraction.

Hollywood Studios

Pros of Hollywood Studios for Families

• Thrilling Rides and Attractions: Hollywood Studios offers an array of thrilling rides, including the iconic Tower of Terror and the immersive Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.  Teenagers and older kids will love this park.
• Character Encounters: Your kids will have the chance to meet popular Disney and Pixar characters, bringing their favorite stories to life right before their eyes.  My children loved meeting Buzz Lightyear!
• Spectacular Shows: Hollywood Studios features entertaining live shows, such as the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular and the dazzling Fantasmic!, creating magical memories for the whole family.

Cons to Consider

• Limited Attractions for Young Children: While Hollywood Studios has some attractions for young children, it may have fewer options compared to other Disney parks like Magic Kingdom.  If you have young kids or toddlers, consider going to shows such as the Frozen Sing-Along and the Disney Junior Dance Party. 
• Smaller Park:  Hollywood Studios is the smallest park on Disney property.  This can make it feel very crowded at times as the parkgoers are not able to spread out as much.   Due to the park’s popularity, rides like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance may have long wait times, so plan accordingly.
• Show Schedules: Some live shows may have limited performance times, so check the schedule in advance to avoid missing out on your favorites.

Tips for Visiting Hollywood Studios

• Utilize the Disney Genie+ System: The Disney Genie+ system allows you to skip the regular lines at certain attractions by purchasing Lightning Lane passes, helping you make the most of your day.
• Arrive Early for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: If you’re a Star Wars fan or want to experience the popular attractions without long wait times, consider arriving early to this themed land.
• Character Dining Experiences: Consider booking character dining experiences at Hollywood & Vine.

Best Restaurants at Hollywood Studios

• Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant: This unique restaurant offers a fun experience, as you dine in vintage cars while watching classic movie clips on a big screen.
• 50’s Prime Time Café: Transport your family back in time to the 1950s, where the servers playfully act like family members and serve delicious comfort food.
• Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo: Located in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, this restaurant offers a wide variety of themed dishes inspired by the Star Wars universe.

Animal Kingdom

As a mom, I believe in the importance of exposing my children to the wonders of nature and wildlife.

At this park, you will find a captivating mix of wildlife and imagination, offering adventure for all ages. 

Here you will find animal exhibits and educational experiences focused on animal conservation.

If your kid is an animal lover, this park is for you. 

Pros of Animal Kingdom for Families

• Immersive Animal Encounters: Animal Kingdom offers incredible opportunities to observe and learn about animals from around the world, making it an educational and enriching experience for kids.  The safari is one of my family’s favorite activities. 
• Thrilling Rides and Shows: From the exhilarating Expedition Everest roller coaster to the awe-inspiring Flight of Passage, the park’s attractions cater to various age groups, ensuring a day full of excitement.
• Themed Lands: Each area in Animal Kingdom boasts of unique theming.  My favorite is Pandora – The World of Avatar.  Other lands include Africa, Asia, and Dinoland USA, transporting your family to different corners of the world.
• Live Entertainment: Enjoy captivating live shows, such as the Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo – The Musical, that will leave your kids amazed and delighted.

Cons to Consider

• Limited Number of Traditional Rides: Animal Kingdom has fewer traditional theme park rides compared to other Disney parks, which might be a factor if your family prefers a higher number of attractions.
• Weather Considerations: Being an outdoor-oriented park, Florida’s weather can be challenging, with heat and occasional rain. This park always feels the hottest.
• Animal Viewing Challenges: Some animal exhibits might have limited visibility due to the animals’ natural behavior or habitats. Be patient and utilize the provided viewing areas.

Tips for Visiting Animal Kingdom

• Plan Your Day Around Animal Encounters: Check the daily schedule for animal feedings and keeper talks to enhance your educational experience.  Animals are more active on the safari in the mornings and evenings when it is not as hot outside. 
• Utilize the Disney Genie+ System: Consider using the Disney Genie+ system to book rides such as Navi River Journey and Kilimanjaro safari. 
• Take Advantage of Single-Rider Lines: If your kids meet height requirements and are comfortable riding separately from you, single-rider lines can significantly reduce wait times at Expedition Everest.
• Wilderness Explorers: Engage your children with the Wilderness Explorers program, where they can complete challenges and earn badges as they explore the park.

Best Restaurants at Animal Kingdom

• Tusker House Restaurant: This character dining experience offers a buffet with diverse African-inspired cuisine, along with the chance to meet Mickey, goofy, Daisy, and Donald in safari outfits.
• Flame Tree Barbecue: Savor mouthwatering barbecue dishes in a picturesque outdoor seating area overlooking Expedition Everest.
• Satu’li Canteen: Located in Pandora – The World of Avatar, this quick-service restaurant serves unique and delicious noodle and rice bowls.  This is my favorite quick-service restaurant in all of Walt Disney World. 

How to get around: Transportation at Disney World?

Transportation at Walt Disney World is a well-oiled machine that ensures guests can move seamlessly between parks and resorts.

Monorail

The iconic monorail glides gracefully above the ground, transporting guests to select resorts and Magic Kingdom in style.

The monorail also runs between the Magic Kingdom and Epcot, making park hopping a breeze.   

Disney Buses

Colorful Disney buses provide convenient and efficient service, connecting all parks and resorts. 

While not the most comfortable option, we find them efficient and they run on a consistent bases. 

Boat Transportation

Certain resorts will offer boat transportation to the parks and to Disney Springs. 

This is a fun way to enjoy a leisurely ride to your destination.  Ferry boats transport a large number of parkgoers to Magic Kingdom from the parking lot.

I don’t know about you, but riding a ferry boat to an amusement park is definitely magical. 

“Minnie Vans” and Ride Shares

If you want to get somewhere quickly, consider renting a “Minnie Van.” 

These are booked in your Lyft app and function like any other ride-share service, except they come equipped with car seats, and the vehicles are refurbished with Minnie’s iconic polka dots. 

Disney Skyliner Gondola

The Disney Skyliner is a modern gondola system. 

It offers breathtaking aerial views as it whisks visitors between select resorts and Epcot or Disney’s Hollywood Studios. 

I love the Skyliner because I don’t have to fold up my stroller to ride it. I just wheel the stroller on and away we go.

The views are amazing.

Walking

Additionally, guests staying at select resorts can enjoy the ease of walking to the theme parks.

Consider booking a hotel in one of the boardwalk resorts for easy access and a short walk to Epcot. 

Book a room at the contemporary resort for a short stroll to Magic Kingdom. 

Hotels on Disney Property.

Disney World offers an array of accommodation options to suit every family’s needs and preferences.

From luxurious resorts to budget-friendly options, you’ll find something perfect for your magical stay.

• Deluxe Resorts: Offering top-notch amenities, these hotels are ideal for families seeking a more upscale experience and proximity to the parks.  Most of these hotels have signature restaurants and bars onsite.  They also have better options for transportation to the parks.  At these resorts, you will find water slides at all the pools. 

• Moderate Resorts: Combining quality and affordability, these mid-range hotels provide comfortable stays without breaking the bank.  While the dining is not as high-end at these resorts compared to Deluxe resorts, you will always find a restaurant onsite.  You will also find water slides at the pools of all moderate resorts.

These resorts are located on Disney property, however, they are not Disney-operated hotels.

They are operated by Marriott so you can use and earn Marriott Bonvoy points for this stay

The Swan and Dolphin offer convenient access to both Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios and are within walking distance of the parks.

They provide excellent amenities, including multiple pools, spa facilities, and a variety of dining options.

Bonus:  When you stay here you will also get perks similar to onsite guests such as early entry privileges and the ability to book a lightening lane at 7 AM

2. Wyndham Garden Lake Buena Vista Disney Springs Resort Area

This hotel offers a more budget-friendly option for travelers.

The rooms are clean and spacious.  It is very close to Disneyworld and is located within walking distance of Disney Springs. 

There is a pool for your kids to enjoy and a good place to take an afternoon break after being at the parks.

3. JW Marriott Orlando Bonnet Creek Resort and Spa:

If you are looking for sophistication this upscale hotel provides a peaceful retreat from the theme parks.

A sit-down meal can be a good way to rest and take a break from the Florida heat.  These are my top picks.

This enchanting restaurant inside Beast’s Castle offers a unique dining experience with three immersive rooms, resembling the iconic ballroom, West Wing, and the Castle Gallery.

Kids can dine like royalty while meeting the iconic Beast.

1. Woody’s Lunch Box (Disney’s Hollywood Studios):

Inspired by Toy Story, this whimsical eatery offers kid-friendly meals and playful theming, resembling a lunch box in Andy’s backyard.

They serve tator tot bowls, grilled cheese, and Disney’s own version of pop tarts

2. Satu’li Canteen (Disney’s Animal Kingdom):

Located in Pandora – The World of Avatar, this quick-service restaurant serves creative and customizable bowls that cater to kids’ preferences.

Pro tip:  Try the cheeseburger pods. 

3. Casey’s Corner (Magic Kingdom):

Situated on Main Street, USA, Casey’s Corner offers classic American hot dogs and an outdoor seating area perfect for watching parades.

Kids will enjoy the fun baseball-themed setting.

4. Columbia Harbour House (Magic Kingdom):

This nautical-themed restaurant provides a variety of tasty seafood and chicken dishes, along with spacious seating on multiple levels.

It might not be the most exciting pizza on Disney property, but kids seem to love it.

6. Pinocchio Village Haus (Magic Kingdom):

This Italian-inspired restaurant allows kids to dine-in rooms themed after scenes from Pinocchio.

The restaurant is known for its flatbread pizzas but they have many other kid-friendly options

The balcony seating overlooking “it’s a small world” adds to the charm. 

My son could not get enough of waving to the passengers on “It’s a small world.”

7. Flame Tree Barbecue (Disney’s Animal Kingdom):

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Expedition Everest, this quick-service location offers delicious barbecue fare that kids will relish.

The pulled pork mac and cheese is a family favorite.

8. Sunshine Seasons(Epcot): 

You can find a wide array of options for your little one here. 

The type of food is seasonal so check your My Disney Experience App for the full menu

The area is air-conditioned and a great place to grab a meal if you are near the Land Pavillion in Epcot. 

9. ABC commissary (Disney’s Hollywood Studios):

Designed to resemble a functioning television studio commissary, it offers guests a nice place to refuel during their day at the park. 

The buffalo chicken grilled cheese is my favorite. Try it!

1. Plan Ahead:

Research and make a flexible itinerary, including dining reservations that can be booked 60 days in advance. 

2. Get to the Parks Early:

Arriving before the park opens(or rope dropping) allows you to experience popular attractions with shorter wait times

3. Use Rider Switch:

For attractions with height requirements, take advantage of Rider Switch to minimize wait times. 

See a cast member at the front of the ride that will set this up for you. 

4. Bring Snacks and Water:

Hit Walmart or Publix before stocking your hotel room with packaged food. Pack snacks and refillable water bottles to keep kids energized and hydrated.

5. Take Breaks:

Schedule downtime or visit a nearby resort for a break from the crowds. 

We head back to our hotel every day around noon to take a nap and cool down.  We then head back in the evening. 

We miss the busiest (and hottest) time of day with this strategy. 

6. Utilize Baby Care Centers:

These centers offer changing tables, nursing rooms, and feeding areas for little ones.

7. Dress Comfortably:

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking all day. 

The last thing you want is blisters. 

8. Bring Sun Protection:

Use sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to protect against the Florida sun.

9. Use the My Disney Experience App:

This app helps with attraction wait times, dining reservations, and mobile ordering.

10. Consider Stroller Rentals:

Renting a stroller can save little legs from getting tired.

You can rent a stroller from an offsite business. Pro Tip: Kingdom Stroller is my favorite

You can also rent them at the front of the park for the day.

11. Use Memory Maker:

Consider purchasing Memory Maker from the My Disney Experience App to get unlimited digital photos taken by Disney PhotoPass photographers.

12. Pack Rain Gear:

Florida weather can be unpredictable, so bring rain ponchos or umbrellas.

13. Attend Character Meet-and-Greets:

Meeting Disney characters can create magical memories for kids.

You can find designated meet-and-greet areas in all the parks

You can also book a meal at a restaurant with character dining where characters will walk around the dining room and take pictures with families while you eat.

14. Try Mobile Ordering:

Use the mobile ordering feature in the app to save time at quick-service restaurants. 

All you do is order your food for your desired time slot. 

Click that you are ready in the app, and then pick it up in the window when the app says your food is ready. 

Easy Peasy, and no need to wait in lines!

15. Stay Hydrated:

Make sure kids drink plenty of water throughout the day.

All quick-service restaurants will give you water for free

16. Have Autograph Books:

Bring autograph books for kids to collect character signatures.

17. Attend Parades and Shows:

Catch parades and shows for captivating entertainment.

18. Buy Disney Gift Cards:

Purchase Disney gift cards in advance to control spending and involve kids in budgeting.

19. Take Naps:

If your kids need naps, find quiet areas or head back to the resort for a midday break.

20. Set Expectations:

Prepare kids for the long days and discuss park rules.

Know there will be meltdowns (Adults may have them too).

21. Embrace the Magic:

Above all, cherish the moments and embrace the magic of Disney World with your kids. 

You only get to have these types of moments with them for a short period of time.  

22. Check Party Schedule

Throughout the year, there are special ticket parties such as Halloween and Christmas-themed parties. that can affect your trip.

Check the calendar beforehand to see if there will be a holiday or special ticketed event while you are there.

Taking your kids to Disney World requires months of pre-planning and sometimes it is hard to know where to start. 

By following these basic tips above, you will at least have a blueprint for where you want to go, where you should stay, and where you should eat.
