• Milder Crowds: One of the best parts? Not bumping elbows with a million tourists. The spring crowds are much more manageable than summer. 

• Pleasant Temperatures: The temperature usually is great – not too hot, not too cold. Perfect for those long strolls or picnics by the Seine.

Cons:

• Unpredictable Weather: Paris in spring can be sunny one day and rainy the next. It’s a bit of a mix, so packing means preparing for both!

• Surprise Closures: Some attractions might have winter schedules or be under maintenance. Always good to have a Plan B.

• Packing Challenges: I’ve learned to pack layers – a light jacket, some tees, and maybe a scarf. Paris weather keeps you on your toes!

Despite the weather’s whims, there’s something special about Paris this time of year. The city feels alive, fresh, and just waiting to be explored.

1. Eiffel Tower: 

Taking my kids to the Eiffel Tower was like watching a childhood dream come to life right before their eyes. Here’s why it’s a must-visit for families and some tips from our own experience:

Why We Loved It:

• Iconic Landmark: It’s the Eiffel Tower! Seriously, it’s as magical as you imagine. The moment my kids saw it, their faces lit up. This is the stuff of storybooks and movies, and seeing it up close is a wow moment for kids and adults alike.

• Spectacular Views: From the top, Paris stretches out like a giant, intricate map. My kids loved spotting landmarks, and we had to, of course, get some epic pictures.

• Illuminated Magic: Seeing the Eiffel Tower light up at night is unforgettable. It’s one of those moments where you can literally see the sparkle in your children’s eyes.

Tips and Insider Info:

• Beat the Crowds: Buy tickets online in advance to skip the long lines. Trust me, this is a lifesaver. Waiting in line with kids? No, thank you!

• Choose Your Level: The second level often has shorter lines and still offers amazing views. The summit is incredible, but it might be a bit much for younger kids.

• Picnic Nearby: Grab some sandwiches and have a picnic on the Champ de Mars, the park right by the Eiffel Tower. We had a picnic in the park right under the tower. Just some simple sandwiches, but with that view, it felt like a gourmet meal.

• The Light Show: The light show is a must-see. It happens every hour after sunset, and trust me, it’s worth waiting for.

2. Notre Dame and Sainte-Chapelle: 

Exploring Notre Dame and Sainte-Chapelle with my kids turned into a lesson about history, beauty, and resilience.

 Even though Notre Dame is currently closed for restoration, its presence is still awe-inspiring.

Notre Dame: 

• A Resilient Icon: While we couldn’t go inside Notre Dame due to the restoration work following the fire, just being in its presence was powerful. We talked about its long history and the recent efforts to preserve it.

• The Exterior Marvels: The cathedral’s outer facade is a fantastic introduction to historical architecture for kids. We admired the flying buttresses, and sculptures, and imagined the stories behind the gargoyles. 

• Future Visits: We’re excited to return one day when it reopens to see the restoration work and once again experience the interior’s grandeur.

Sainte-Chapelle: 

• Stunning Beauty: This royal chapel, a short walk from Notre Dame, was an unexpected highlight. The kids were amazed by the 1,113 stained-glass panels in the upper chapel.

• A Rainbow of Colors: The way the sunlight filters through the glass, creating a kaleidoscope of colors, left us all amazed. 

Our Insider Tips:

• Plan Ahead: With Notre Dame closed, Sainte-Chapelle can get quite busy. It’s best to visit early in the day or later in the afternoon to avoid crowds.

• Paris Museum Pass: This pass is great for skipping lines and includes entry to Sainte-Chapelle.

• Enjoy the Surroundings: The area around Notre Dame, including the adjacent Île de la Cité, is rich in history and perfect for exploring with the family.

3. Explore Paris’ Neighborhoods

One of my favorite parts about visiting Paris with my kids is wandering through its distinct neighborhoods. 

Each has its own character, and exploring them was a great way to experience Parisian Culture.   Here are my 3 favorite neighborhoods to explore.

The Latin Quarter: 

• Educational and Fun: Known for its intellectual history and busy streets. It’s home to the famous Sorbonne University and the Panthéon.

• Culinary Treats: This neighborhood is a haven for foodies! We found cozy cafes serving up delicious crepes – a big hit with the kids.

Montmartre:

• Artistic Surroundings: Once home to artists like Picasso and Van Gogh, its artistic legacy lives on. Walking up the cobbled streets of Montmartre, it felt like we were tracing the steps of famous artists. 

• Sacre-Cœur and Stunning Views: The stunning basilica at the top of the hill offers panoramic views of Paris.  The view from the basilica is breathtaking and is a perfect spot for family photos.

Le Marais:

• Time Travel in the City. The area is known for its preserved medieval streets and narrow alleyways. This is the area we stayed on our first trip to Paris and it always has a special place in my heart. 

• Squares and Museums: The beautiful squares, especially Place des Vosges, were great spots for a break..

Tips from Our Experience:

• Comfy Shoes for the Win: There’s a lot of walking, so good shoes are key – learned that the hard way!

• Savor the Small Moments: It’s the little things – a quaint shop, a friendly local, the architecture – that truly make Paris special. 

4. Disneyland Paris:

 We are big Disney people and love going to Disney World and Disneyland stateside, so taking a day trip to Disneyland Paris was a must. 

It’s located right outside of Paris and is easy to get to via public transportation.

Why we love Disneyland Paris

• A Magical Experience: The moment we walked through the gates, it felt like we were in another world. The kids’ faces lit up when they saw the iconic fairy tale castles.

• Rides for All Ages: Whether it’s the thrilling Space Mountain or the adorable It’s a Small World, there’s something for every age and thrill level.

• Parades and Shows: The parades are spectacular – a real highlight. We watched in awe as floats and characters danced by, bringing the magic of Disney to life.

• Plan Ahead: We bought our tickets online in advance. Also, check out the schedule for shows and parades to make the most of your day.

• Disney Premier Access: This service lets you skip the lines on popular rides. It’s worth it, especially when you have excited little ones with you.

5. Big Bus Tour in Paris: 

Hopping on the Big Bus Tour in Paris turned out to be one of the smartest decisions we made during our family trip. 

It’s an effortless and enjoyable way to see the city’s major attractions, especially when you’re navigating with kids.

• Ease of Travel: The hop-on, hop-off feature of the tour means you can visit Paris’s iconic spots at your own pace without the stress of navigating public transport with kids.

• Unbeatable Views: Sitting on the top deck, we had an unobstructed view of Paris’s iconic landmarks. It’s a thrilling way for kids (and adults!) to see the city..

• Seamless Sightseeing: We covered so much ground without tiring out the kids. From the Louvre to the Champs-Élysées, it was sightseeing made simple and fun.

• Photo Opportunities Galore: From the top deck, we snapped some amazing family photos with iconic backdrops – memories we’ll cherish forever.

Making the Most of the Big Bus Tour:

• Plan Your Stops: We picked stops close to kid-friendly attractions like the Louvre and the Trocadéro Gardens. It helped us manage our time.  Look at the route map beforehand to identify key stops and plan your day accordingly.

• Start Early: We found that starting our tour in the morning helped us avoid the larger afternoon crowds and gave us a fresh start to the day.

• Check the Weather: If it’s a rainy day, the lower deck is still great, but the top deck offers the best experience in good weather.

6. Seine River Cruise: 

Taking a cruise down the Seine was one of those ‘pinch me’ moments in our Paris adventure. 

There’s something truly special about seeing Paris from the Seine River.

Why a Seine River Cruise is Unmissable:

• A New Perspective: Gliding along the Seine gave us views of Paris we couldn’t get on land. Seeing the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Louvre from the water was extraordinary.

• Iconic Bridges: Passing under famous bridges like Pont Neuf and Pont Alexandre III was a highlight. 

• Lit Up Landmarks: Seeing landmarks like the Louvre and Notre Dame lit up at night was magical. It gave us a whole new appreciation for the city.

• Choose the Right Time: We took an evening cruise, which allowed us to see the city light up at dusk – it was magical. However, daytime cruises have their own benefits, with more details of the city visible.

• Bring a Camera: I probably took a hundred photos! These are some of my favorite photos from our trip. You’ll want to capture the beauty of Paris from this unique vantage point. 

• Layer Up: Even on a warm day, it can get breezy on the river. Bringing an extra layer or a light jacket helped us stay comfortable.

• Check Cruise Options: There are various types of cruises available, from simple sightseeing trips to dinner cruises. Choose one that suits your family’s interests and schedule.

• Seating Choices: If possible, grab a seat on the open deck for the best views, but the glass-covered area is great in cooler weather.

7. Catacombs of Paris: A Mysterious Adventure Below the City

If you are looking for an intriguing (and eerie) excursion for your family, consider doing a tour of the catacombs.

 It is like stepping into a different world, one that is beneath the busy Parisian streets. 

Why Families Love the Catacombs:

• A Journey Through History: The Catacombs aren’t just a series of tunnels; they’re part of Paris’ unique history. Walking amongst the bones of millions will leave you in awe

• A Different Perspective of Paris: This tour gave us a glimpse into the hidden underside of Paris, contrasting sharply with the city’s usual glamour.

Our Experience and Tips:

• Not for the Faint of Heart: The Catacombs can be a bit eerie, so they’re more suited for older kids who can appreciate the historical significance.

• Plan Ahead: We bought our tickets in advance, which I highly recommend. The queues can be long, and entrance numbers are limited.

• Dress Appropriately: It’s cool and damp underground, so wearing layers helped us stay comfortable during the tour.

• Limited Accessibility: The Catacombs are accessed by a narrow spiral staircase and the paths can be uneven, so it’s not suitable for everyone.

• Prepare Your Kids: A little prep talk about what to expect can help set the right tone for older kids, ensuring they understand and appreciate the experience.

8. Paris’s Gardens and Playgrounds

We found pockets of tranquility and fun in the city’s green spaces and playgrounds. 

Here’s what made these spots so special for us.

Luxembourg Gardens: 

• A Kid’s Paradise: The Luxembourg Gardens were a hit with my kids. Their favorite part was the large playground, complete with slides, swings, and climbing frames. It was a joy watching them play and make new friends.

• Serene and Beautiful: While the kids played, I soaked in the beauty of the gardens. The manicured lawns, flowerbeds, and statues are straight out of a picture book.

• Pond and Puppet Shows: The pond, where kids sail model boats, adds to the charm. We also caught a traditional puppet show, which was a fun surprise 

Tuileries Garden: 

• Art and Nature Combined: The garden, nestled between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde,is a wonderful place for a leisurely stroll.

• Picnics Among Art: Surrounded by stunning sculptures and the backdrop of the Louvre, our picnic here felt like dining in an open-air museum.

Jardin des Plantes: 

• The Menagerie Zoo: The small zoo within Jardin des Plantes was a treat. It’s one of the world’s oldest zoos and has a charming, old-world feel that the kids found fascinating.

Tips for Enjoying Paris’s Green Spaces:

• Bring a Picnic: Parisian parks are perfect for picnics. Grab some fresh pastries or sandwiches from a nearby boulangerie and enjoy a meal in the garden.

• Check for Events: Many parks host events and shows, especially in the spring and summer. They add a unique and local flavor to your park visit.

9. Explore Parisian Food

We discovered the joy of French cuisine, indulged in hands-on cooking, and even turned chocolate tasting into a learning experience. 

Here’s a glimpse into our culinary adventures in Paris.

Exploring Different Foods:

• Discovering French Classics: Paris is full of eateries that cater to families, offering classic dishes like croissants, crêpes, and baguettes, which are generally well-received by children.

• Sweet Treats: A visit to a local patisserie is a must. The array of pastries, including popular favorites like macarons and éclairs, offers a sweet introduction to French desserts. Sampling pastries from local patisseries became our daily ritual. 

Cooking Class: 

• Hands-On Experience: We took a family cooking class, which was a hit! Learning to make French dishes. These classes often cover popular dishes that are both fun to make and eat.

• Chefs in the Making: The kids were so proud of their culinary creations. It was a wonderful way to engage them in cooking and trying new foods.

Chocolate Museum: 

• Sweet Learning: The Chocolate Museum (Musée Gourmand du Chocolat) offers a comprehensive look at the history of chocolate, from its ancient origins to modern production methods. The interactive exhibits kept the kids engaged and eager to learn.

• Tasting Galore: The highlight, of course, was the chocolate tasting. We learned about different types of chocolate and what makes each one unique. It was a tasty lesson in fine chocolate appreciation.

Local Markets: 

• Fresh and Local: Paris’s local markets are ideal for experiencing the country’s rich culinary heritage. We explored stalls brimming with fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and meats. It was a great way to show the kids where our food comes from.

• Sampling and Shopping: We tasted our way through the markets, trying local specialties and picking up ingredients for our picnic lunches.

• Be Adventurous: Encourage the kids to try new foods, even if it’s just a bite. 

• Look for Interactive Experiences: Cooking classes and interactive museums add an educational twist to the culinary exploration.

• Enjoy the Atmosphere: Take time to savor the experience – whether it’s a leisurely meal at a café or wandering through a bustling market.

10. Visit the Museums in Paris

The museums in Paris were a great place to take my kids.  

They were far from stuffy or boring, and they offered interactive exhibits and child-friendly tours.

 Here are some of our favorite museum stops in the city.

The Louvre: 

• A Hit with the Kids: Surprisingly, the Louvre was a big hit with my children. They were fascinated by the ancient Egyptian artifacts and the grandeur of the Greek statues. 

• Family-Friendly Activities: We took advantage of a family-focused tour.  My kids loved the scavenger hunt the guide provided. which made the vast art collection more relatable and fun for the kids.

Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie: 

• Hands-On Learning: This museum was like a giant science playground. My kids loved the interactive exhibits, especially the ones about space and biology.

• The Children’s City: Tailored for kids aged 2 to 12, this area was packed with games and activities. It was educational and entertaining, and the kids didn’t want to leave!

Musée d’Orsay: 

• Friendly for Young Art Lovers: The Musée d’Orsay’s collection of Impressionist art was surprisingly engaging for the kids. The colorful paintings seemed to capture their imagination.

• Interactive Tours: The family-themed tours were great, helping to bring the artwork to life in a way that was interesting for both adults and kids.

Musée de l’Orangerie: 

• Mesmerizing Water Lilies: Monet’s Water Lilies murals were a standout. Their size and beauty were able to capture and hold even my youngest child’s attention.

• Perfect for a Short Visit: The smaller size of this museum meant we could enjoy art without the kids getting overwhelmed or tired.

• Louvre and Tuileries Garden: The striking glass pyramid of the Louvre and the elegant greenery of the Tuileries Garden offer a mix of modern and classic Paris.

• Along the Seine:  The historic bridges and riverbanks will add a romantic Parisian feel.

• Notre Dame and Île de la Cité: The area around Notre Dame, especially the quaint streets of Île de la Cité,  will give you some beautiful photos.

• Paris Carnival (Carnaval de Paris): It’s a tradition that dates back centuries and brings the city’s streets to life. The streets burst into life with colorful parades, showcasing elaborate costumes and lively music

• Foire du Trône: It’s one of the oldest and largest fairs in Paris, offering rides, games, and food stalls. It combines the thrill of amusement rides with the charm of traditional fairgrounds, offering a fun-filled day out for all ages.

• Nuit des Musées (Night of Museums): For one night, museums across the city stay open late and offer free admission. It’s a unique opportunity to see art and culture in a different light – literally.

Making the Most of Festival Season:

• Plan Ahead: Check the festival dates and plan accordingly. Some events, like the Nuit des Musées, are city-wide and can be a highlight of your trip.

• Be Open to Surprises: We found that some of the best festival experiences were the ones we hadn’t planned for. Stumbling upon a street performance or a local celebration can be delightful.

• Early Birds Catch the Views: We found that getting to attractions like the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower early in the morning beat the larger crowds that swarm in later. It’s a bit of a hustle to get out early, but totally worth it.

• Off-Peak is Your Friend: Visiting popular spots during typically off-peak hours, like later in the afternoon or during weekday mornings, really helped us avoid the biggest crowds.

Packing for Spring in Paris

• Layers are Key: The weather in Paris during spring can be a bit unpredictable. We packed layers – light jackets, sweaters, and scarves – which were perfect for the changing temperatures throughout the day.

• Comfortable Footwear: We walked a lot! Comfortable shoes were a must for the whole family. Trust me, your feet will thank you after a day of exploring.

• Rain Gear: An umbrella or raincoat came in handy for those unexpected spring showers.

• Public Transport is Great: We relied heavily on the Paris metro and buses. They’re an efficient and cost-effective way to travel around the city. Plus, the kids loved riding the Parisian metro.

• Metro Maps and Apps: Having a metro map on hand (or an app on your phone) made navigating the public transport system much easier. 

A Few Extra Tips:

• Snack Breaks: We always carried some snacks and water. It kept everyone energized and happy.

• Rest Stops: We made sure to take regular breaks. Whether it was a quick stop at a café or just sitting in a beautiful square, resting our feet helped keep everyone in good spirits.

• Consider getting a Museum Pass: If you will be visiting multiple sites, a museum pass can save you money. Plus at many attractions, you will be able to skip the lines at the entrance. Time is money!
