One Day in Portofino: The Perfect Itinerary for Short Trip

When my family and I spent one day in Portofino, Italy, last summer, it was amazing. 

This small place by the sea is really special, with its bright buildings and beautiful water.  

With limited time, I wanted to ensure we experienced as much as possible in this little seaside village.  

If you’re planning to visit Portofino by land or by cruise ship and need the perfect 1-day itinerary, I’ve got some great recommendations and tips to help you see the best parts and have a fantastic time just like we did.

Morning in Portofino:

Walk Around the Piazzetta

  • Start with a walk in the Piazzetta, the main square. It’s lively and full of colors, a great spot to feel the pulse of Portofino.

Grab Breakfast

  • For breakfast, opt for a local experience by visiting a bakery or market near the Piazzetta. You’ll find tasty pastries and fresh fruit, just like the locals eat.

What to Do Next

  • Option 1: Chiesa di San Martino – Check out this beautiful,  quiet church. It’s a peaceful place, and the paintings are beautiful.
  • Option 2: Castello Brown – If you’re up for a bit of adventure, hike up to this old castle. The walk is fun, and the views from the top are awesome. You will find some of the best photo spots from here. 

Afternoon in Portofino: 

Lunch at Trattoria Tripoli

  • For lunch, head to Trattoria Tripoli. It’s a family-friendly place with great views of the harbor. Start with prosciutto and melon, and don’t forget to sample their pasta. 

Afternoon Activities

  • Option 1: Beach Day – Spend the afternoon at the beach. Swim or relax by the water.

Gelato Break

  • Don’t forget to take a break for some gelato in the afternoon. It’s the perfect mid-day treat to keep everyone happy and cool.

Evening in Portofino: 

  • Option 1: Walk by the Marina- Take it easy and go for a walk by the water. It’s nice to see all the yachts and the lights reflecting on the water at night.
  • Option 2: Window Shop- Walk through the town and check out the shop windows. It’s a more relaxed way to see what’s around without the daytime crowd.

Dinner Time at Ristorante Puny

  • After your walk, head over to Ristorante Puny for some amazing seafood. It’s right by the sea, so you get great food and a great view all at once.  

Sleeping at Hotel Piccolo

  • End your day by staying at Hotel Piccolo. It’s a cozy place that’s great for families, and you’ll love waking up to the sea view right from your bed

Best Things to Do With One Day in Portofino

1. Explore the Piazzetta

  • What it is: It’s the main square in the middle of Portofino where everyone hangs out.
  • Why you’ll love it: It’s the main square in the village, super lively and pretty. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the local culture and enjoy the stunning scenery.
  • How to get there: Just walk! It’s right in the center of town, so you can’t miss it.

When my family and I wandered into the Piazzetta, it was like stepping into a postcard of Italy. 

The place was buzzing with people, and the buildings around the harbor were so colorful and beautiful. It felt like the real Italy you dream about. 

We just stood there for a bit, taking it all in. The boats, the water, the laughter – it was all so perfect. 

Hanging out there, you really get why people love this place so much.

2. Visit Chiesa di San Martino (Church of St. Martin)

  • What it is: This historic church is nestled in Portofino, known for its beautiful religious art and grand columns.
  • Why you’ll love it: It’s super peaceful, and admission is free
  • How to get there: It’s a short walk from the main area of town. Just follow the signs, and you’ll get there in no time.

When we stepped inside the Chiesa di San Martino, it was like everything outside just went quiet. 

This beautiful old church feels like a little hideaway from the rest of the world.  

Construction began on it over 500 years ago.  

The inside is something to see, the way the light comes through the windows. It’s a great spot to take a break from walking around and just sit for a bit. 

My family and I loved the calm vibe, and it was cool to see a bit of the local traditions up close.  

 It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in Portofino.

3. Relax on the Beaches of Portofino

  • What it is: The beaches around Portofino are stunning spots where you can chill out, swim, and have fun in the sun with your family.
  • Why you’ll love it: They’re perfect for a day of relaxation and fun by the sea, with beautiful views and clear water.
  • How to get there: Most beaches can be reached by a short walk or boat ride from Portofino. 

Our family beach day at Baia dei Cannone was a highlight of our trip to Portofino. 

The beach is a bit hidden, accessed by a staircase that winds down through the cliffs to the rocky shore. 

It feels like a secret paradise! The kids had a blast exploring the rocks and splashing in the waves while the adults enjoyed soaking up the sun and the incredible views. 

The beach isn’t sandy; it’s more rocky. The unique setting and the crystal-clear water made it an unforgettable part of our Portofino visit.

4. Museo del Parco

  • Why you’ll love it: It’s a chill place to see some neat art and enjoy the outdoors at the same time.
  • How to get there: Just a short walk from the main part of town, and you’re there. Super easy to find.

Not every day you get to see extraordinary sculptures out in the open, surrounded by trees and the sound of the sea nearby.   

You will love strolling through the park. The park’s layout encourages leisurely walks, inviting guests to explore at their own pace and discover the artistic pieces among the greenery. 

Its proximity to the heart of Portofino ensures that it is an accessible and worthwhile addition to any itinerary.

5. Castello Brown

  • What it is: A big old castle sitting high over Portofino, it has been around since the 15th century.
  • Why you’ll love it: You get to see some of the best views of the sea and the town from up there. Plus, it’s pretty cool to walk around an old castle. It’s only 5 euros to get in
  • How to get there: It’s a bit of a walk up the hill from the harbor, but the path is nice and shaded. Plus, the views are worth it.

Castello Brown is this incredible old castle right above Portofino. 

For just 5 euros, you can go inside and check it out. There’s a lot of history in those walls, and walking around feels a bit like stepping back in time. 

Plus, the views from up there are amazing—you can see the whole town and the sea. 

It’s also the place where Kourtney Kardashian got married, which is kind of cool. 

The walk up to the castle is part of the fun, with lots of great spots to take pictures. If you’re in Portofino, it’s worth the trip to see Castello Brown.

6. Window Shop in Portofino

  • What it is: Take a stroll through the cute little streets of Portofino and check out the shops.
  • Why you’ll love it: You’ll find all sorts of cool stuff, from fancy brand names to unique local crafts that you can’t get anywhere else.
  • What to look for: Keep an eye out for big names like Gucci and Prada, but don’t miss the local goodies like handmade ceramics, olive oil, and authentic Ligurian pesto.

Walking around Portofino and looking at the shop windows is a lot of fun. 

The streets are filled with all kinds of shops, where you can see some really fancy brands like Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton. 

But what’s even more remarkable is checking out the local goods. There are shops where you can find things made right in Portofino or nearby, like beautiful ceramics painted by hand, really good olive oil, and some of the best pesto you’ll ever taste. 

It’s a great way to spend some time, seeing all the neat things for sale and maybe picking up a souvenir or two to remember your trip by.

7. Marina di Portofino

  • What it is: This is the picturesque waterfront area of Portofino, where visitors can stroll along the dock and admire an array of luxurious yachts anchored in the harbor.
  • Why you’ll love it: It’s super pretty and relaxing just to wander around, look at the big yachts, and maybe even see some fish swimming around.
  • What to look out for: Keep an eye on the water for cool marine life like fish and maybe even some dolphins if you’re lucky.

The Marina di Portofino is one of those spots that makes you feel good. 

Walking along the water, you get to see all these amazing yachts parked in the harbor, and it’s like a peek into a whole other world.  

But it’s not just about the boats; the marina itself is gorgeous, with the sea on one side and colorful buildings on the other. 

And if you take a moment to look into the water, you can see all sorts of sea creatures going about their day. 

It’s a great place to take a break, enjoy the view, and soak in the vibe of Portofino.

8. San Giorgio Church

  • What it is: A church set on a hill above Portofino, known for its history and stunning location.
  • Why you’ll love it: The hike to get there is filled with beautiful sights, and once you’re at the top, the views of Portofino and the sea are breathtaking.
  • What to look out for: Enjoy the hike up because there are some great spots to see along the way. And don’t forget to look around once you’re at the top – the view is something else.

The journey to the church is an experience in itself, with a trail that winds through green landscapes and offers glimpses of the sea below.  

At the top, You can see the whole town of Portofino below you and the big blue sea stretching out. It’s super peaceful up there, too. 

It’s a great spot to just chill for a bit and take in all the beauty around you. 

The church’s tranquil setting provides a perfect backdrop for reflecting and admiring the surrounding beauty. 

If you’re in Portofino, you’ve got to make the trip up to see it.

  • What it is: Renting your own boat to take a private tour around Portofino and see everything from the water.
  • Why you’ll love it: It’s a fun way to see the sights. Many tours come with snorkel equipment, beer and wine, and a local boat captain to show you the beauty of the coastline.  
  • What to look out for: Keep an eye out for hidden coves, cool sea creatures, and all the beautiful spots along the coast that you can’t see from land.

You get to be the captain of your own little journey, cruising around the coastline and checking out all the amazing views from a whole new angle.

It’s amazing because you can find spots you’d never get to see if you were just walking around town.

Is One Day in Portofino Enough?

Spending just one day in Portofino can feel like a whirlwind, but it’s possible. 

Portofino is pretty small, so you can explore much of it without rushing too much. 

You can enjoy a stroll around the Piazzetta, visit a couple of key sights like Chiesa di San Martino or Castello Brown, relax on the beach, and have a great meal by the sea. 

If you like to dive deep into the local culture, one day might feel short.  Plus, there’s something special about experiencing Portofino in the evening when the day-trippers and cruise ship passengers have left.  

Due to Portofino’s location, it is the perfect place to take a day trip from Cinque Terre or Santa Margherita Ligure.  You can take a bus, train, or ferry from many other parts of the Italian Riviera. 

Travel Tips for Exploring Portofino in One Day

  • 1. Start Early: Get going early to enjoy the village before the crowds.
  • 2. Try Local Food: Dive into dishes like seafood, pasta, and pesto. Gelato is a must!
  • 3. Plan for Lunch: Pick your lunch spot early. Reservations can be helpful.
  • 4. Respect the Town: It’s a small place of only about 400 residents, so be mindful of the locals and their environment.
  • 5. Stay in Camogli: If you’re watching your wallet, consider staying in nearby Camogli. It’s less expensive and still very charming. You can visit Portofino for the day without breaking the bank.
  • 6. Free sights: Focus on free activities like exploring the town, hiking, and beach time.
  • 7. Train Station:  The nearest train station is in Santa Margherita Ligure.  From there, you can get to Portofino by bus, ferry, or even walking the scenic route.
