We recently returned home from a Mediterranean family cruise with my two-year-old on Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas.

I’ve done the research and gathered all the must-have items that will keep your little one happy and comfortable throughout the journey.

1. Lightweight clothing: Pack comfortable and breathable clothes, considering the weather at your destination.

2. Swimwear: Don’t forget swimsuits, swim diapers, and sun hats for those poolside adventures.

3. Layers: Include a few lightweight jackets or sweaters on the deck for cooler evenings.

4. Sleepwear: Bring enough sleepwear for each night of your cruise.

5. Shoes: Pack a pair of comfortable shoes and sandals suitable for different activities.

6. Formal Night Attire:  Most cruises have at least one formal night, so bring an outfit that is a little fancy. 

Safety Items:

1. Life jackets: Many cruise ships provide life jackets, but it’s wise to carry one that fits your toddler properly

2. Childproofing supplies: Pack outlet covers, cabinet locks, and door handle covers to childproof your cabin. Our trick is to bring painter’s tape to cover those outlets and tape the cabinets closed.

3. First aid kit: Include band-aids, antiseptic wipes, fever-reducing medication, and any necessary prescription medications.  

4. Identification: Carry a copy of your toddler’s identification, such as a passport or birth certificate, in case of emergencies. 

Feeding Essentials:

1. Snacks: Bring along a variety of healthy snacks your toddler enjoys, such as dried fruit, cereal bars, and cheese sticks.

2. Sippy cups: Carry spill-proof sippy cups for mess-free hydration on the go.

3. Bibs and utensils: Don’t forget to pack bibs and child-sized utensils for mealtimes.

Diapering Must-Haves:

1. Diapers: Calculate the number of diapers you’ll need based on your toddler’s average usage and add a few extras.

2. Wipes: Pack enough wipes for diaper changes and quick clean-ups.

3. Diaper rash cream: Include a travel-sized tube to soothe your toddler’s skin.

4. Changing pad: A portable changing pad provides a hygienic and convenient surface for diaper changes.

3. Stroller or carrier: Depending on your toddler’s age and preferences, bring an umbrella stroller or carrier for exploring ports of call.  Consider your port of call.  For certain areas, the cobblestone streets make bringing a carrier superior to the stroller.

5. Ipad or device:  Sometimes you just have to break out the screens.

6. Chargers: Don’t forget chargers for your phones, tablets, cameras, and other electronic devices.

7. Beach gear:  If you are taking a Caribbean cruise or going to a location with a sandy beach, you may want to consider collapsable sand toys or an inflatable beach ball. 

Toiletries:

1. Baby wash and shampoo: Carry travel-sized bottles of your toddler’s preferred bath products.

2. Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen:  No one likes a vacation with a sunburn. 

3. Toothbrush and toothpaste: Remember to bring a toddler-sized toothbrush and fluoride-free toothpaste.

Items You Can’t Forget:

1. Identification documents: Don’t leave without your toddler’s passport or birth certificate.

2. Medications: If your child requires any prescribed medications, make sure to pack them securely.  We like this travel pill container

3. Boarding Passes: Print or have electronic copies of your cruise ship’s boarding passes.

4. Travel Insurance: Carry copies of your insurance policy and emergency contact numbers.

5. Comfort items: Bring along your toddler’s favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or pacifier for comfort during travel and sleep.

Additional considerations for a toddler’s cruise packing list

In addition to the essentials mentioned above, here are a few additional items you may want to consider packing for your toddler on a cruise:

A nightlight or a small lamp for the cabin, as it can be unfamiliar and dark at night.

Extra batteries for any electronic toys or gadgets your toddler may have. We also used this portable charger that has different types of chargers compatible with each type of electronic device we own.

A portable noise machine to help with afternoon naps and sleep environment.

Disposable bibs and placemats for easy cleanup during mealtimes.

Ziplock bags to store wet swimsuits, protect valuables from sand and water, and to store snacks in.  We would grab Cheerios and other dry snacks from the buffet in the morning and give them to our kids in the afternoon for a snack.

Travel Adapters: Check the plug types at your destination and bring suitable adapters if needed.

Day Bag: Pack a small backpack or tote bag for carrying essentials during onshore excursions.

Remember to check with your cruise line for any specific guidelines or restrictions regarding what you can and cannot bring onboard. It’s also a good idea to pack a few extra items of clothing and essentials in case of unexpected delays or emergencies.

Tips for packing efficiently for a toddler on a cruise

Now that you know what essentials to pack for your toddler on a cruise, here are some tips to help you pack efficiently and make the most of the limited space in your cruise cabin:

This will make it easier to find what you need without rummaging through your entire suitcase.  We have a different color for each member of our family to make things even more convenient to find things in a pinch. 

4. Roll, don’t fold: Rolling clothes instead of folding them can help save space in your luggage. It also helps minimize wrinkles and keeps clothes neat and organized.

5. Use travel-sized toiletries: Opt for travel-sized toiletries or transfer them into small containers to save space. This will also make it easier to comply with airline carry-on restrictions if you’re flying to your cruise departure port.

6. Pack items in zip lock bags: Use zip lock bags to pack small items like socks, underwear, and accessories. This will keep them organized and prevent them from getting lost in your luggage.
